 Updated 4 July

THE BISHOP OF WINCHESTER ordained his first Priests on Saturday 30 June and his first Deacons on Sunday 1 July, in services at Winchester Cathedral and St Martin de Grouville in Jersey (4 July).

A total of 14 new Priests were ordained in Winchester Cathedral on Saturday 30 June, with one Priest due to be ordained at St Martin's in Jersey four days later. Meanwhile, Sunday 1 saw 15 Deacons ordained in the Cathedral, with the Bishop of Winchester conducting all the ceremonies. The names of all ordained follow at the bottom of this page.

Bishop Tim, who met with all the ordination candidates in the weeks leading up to their special days, said that it had been a great privilege to listen to their stories, and hear so many different expressions of ministry.

"One thing strikes me above all else: that God is at work in people's lives in the most amazing way," said the Bishop

"He is the One who has brought each of these people to this point, ready and willing to make a public commitment to serve the Lord Jesus Christ as ordained ministers, 'living - and leading - the mission of Jesus' in this Diocese."

"May they continue to know and and grow in the joy of his service."

'Mixture of emotion'

Among the new Priests was Gordon Randall, from Chineham, who many across the diocese will also know from his role as Stewardship Adviser for the Diocese of Winchester. Prior to being 'Priested', Gordon shared some thoughts:

"As I reflect on this and what it means I’m full of a whole mixture of different emotion," he said.

"On the one hand this is a momentous moment and hugely exciting. However, there is also part of me feeling just a little daunted by what lies ahead; How could God want an ordinary bloke like me serving Him in this way?"

"God’s love, grace and mercy bowls me over as I continue to experience the joy of this calling, the prospect for service it opens up and my own development as a disciple of Christ that it presents."

Taking stock

In preparation for ordination, the candidates have the chance go away for a few days' retreat prior to being Priested or Deaconed. Gordon explained that, having been Deaconed at this time last year, he knew a little of what to expect:

"Essentially, this is time to get away from it all, take stock, relax and at the same time really focus on God," he said.

"It’s a great opportunity to stop, listen to God and reflect. There will be some formal time together, opportunities to interact and share with others as well as specific times of silence."

On the Saturday evening, 30 June, the Priest candidates headed off to the cathedral to meet guests and a huge number of people who have supported them along the way.

"Not least of my supporters is my wife Ruth," said Gordon.
"It will be amazing – thank you Lord Jesus!"
